Every child deserves one room that feels calm
Better Spaces CIC exists because the law protects a family’s right to shelter, but nothing guarantees them a room that feels safe, ordered or theirs. We fill that gap, one room at a time.
Where we began
A spare weekend that became a mission
Better Spaces started with a single flat in temporary accommodation, three children sharing one mattress, and a volunteer joiner who couldn’t walk away without doing something.
What began as an afternoon of borrowed paint and flat-pack furniture became a repeatable method: measure, design, source, install — all within a family’s existing four walls, in a single visit.
We’ve since worked with local authorities, housing associations and family support workers who see the same pattern every day — decent housing on paper, but nowhere a child can settle to sleep or study.

What we hold to
Our values
- Dignity first — every family we work with chooses what happens in their own home.
- Speed matters — a childhood doesn’t wait for a long waiting list.
- Light touch, high impact — we transform what’s there, we don’t rebuild it.
- No judgement — poverty is a circumstance, not a character flaw.
- Quiet delivery — no cameras in a child’s bedroom, no story without consent.
Why rooms matter
The evidence behind every project
A stable, calm bedroom is not decoration — it shapes how a child sleeps, learns and copes.

“I’ve stood in rooms where a child had nowhere to put a single toy, and I’ve gone back weeks later to find them proud to show me their bookshelf. That’s the whole reason this charity exists.”
— Founder, Better Spaces CIC
What we don’t do: we are not a repairs service. We do not fix damp, mould or structural disrepair, and we never replace a landlord’s legal duties — we work alongside them, transforming what’s already there into somewhere a child can call theirs.
